Solution Brief: Custom Application Services
Migrating and Supporting Legacy Applications with Oracle
Application Express
Industry: Financial Services
Solution: Legacy Application Support (Oracle)
Problem:
This particular client was part of a well known U.K Insurance
Company several years ago. The core bespoke application was
developed by a team of contractors and in 2002 and this served the
business well. As the business grew organically and became
regulated by the FSA many additional enhancements were required to
the application itself.
The main issue for our client was they had no formal application
development methodology and most customisations had effectively
been 'bolted-on' to the core system. This led to a poorly
performing, unstable application which was unable to cope with the
increased number of transactions that occurred during peak periods.
The previous developers were no longer in a position to assist and
the platform itself had become de-supported.
Solution:
After completing an in depth application review and
familiarisation audit, Quantix put in place a comprehensive
Application Support service with the short term aim of keeping the
business and its applications functioning during periods of high
demand. Some quick wins were achieved. The main challenge though
was to transition legacy applications onto a supported platform
which would provide stability, performance and essential
scalability.
Having gained an in-depth understanding of the functional
processes and business logic in the application it was agreed that
migrating to the latest core Oracle technology was the best route
to take. Quantix subsequently upgraded the Oracle environment to
11g, deployed Oracle APEX as the development framework and
implemented an enterprise wide Oracle-based Business Intelligence
Solution to aid management planning. It is anticipated that further
return on investment will be gained by migrating the new,
simplified application environment to Quantix's Nimbus-Q cloud
platform.
