Systems Monitoring in the Cloud - GEM
GEM is an advanced monitoring framework allowing customers to
gain a 360 view of the both their cloud and internal IT resources.
This cloud service will deliver an easy to use dashboard providing
real time health and monitoring statistics of the entire IT estate
from networks and servers to databases and applications.
GEM was originally developed by Quantix to overcome a lack of
software in the market which allowed our team to have real time
monitoring information across a wide spectrum of technologies from
switches and databases to applications. Traditionally IT
departments have used a number of different products to gain the
same result, however this drastically impacts the time to fix,
creates separate information silos and doesn't provide an overall
view. In addition, our work with the ISV community provided the
need to monitor industry specific applications.
Several years of development later Quantix launched GEM, a
flexible monitoring framework providing a unified view for the full
technology stack. The main difference in providing a framework
over off the shelf software is that we can customise
the monitoring solution to fit our clients requirements. Therefore
over and above our recommended templates we can provide monitoring
for in-house niche applications or hone the monitoring of an object
down to focus on information relevant to the customer.
There are 3 main elements which contribute to the GEM
solution:
Customer Dashboard
The customer dashboard has been designed to provide a first line
view which requires minimal technical knowledge to interpret. A
simple visualisation based on a traffic light system allows any
user to gain a real time view of the environment health. Each
object and resource depicted in the portal also has drill down
function to provide a granular level of technical information.
Alerting Engine
At the heart of GEM is a mature alerting engine which has been
tuned and developed using our 15 years experience in managing
customer environments. In addition to publishing information to the
portal, alerts can be configured to be sent directly to the
customers e-mail or mobile device.
Historical Reporting
Report builder allows customers to trend and historically report
on monitoring activity over a period of time. This functionality
helps our clients with capacity planning and provides the ability
to visualise problems and issues at a strategic
level.
Powered by the Quantix Cloud
GEM has been developed as a Software as a Service and is a
fraction of the cost to traditional off-the-shelf products. This
means that there is no requirement to install, manage and maintain
the technology as it is hosted and monitored at Quantix through a
large and highly skilled team of technicians.
Delivered from our managed cloud platform (Nimbus-Q), the
service delivers a high level of availability as the technology is
clustered across several physical nodes and 2 UK data centres.
